Education
While the field of ecology focuses on the relationships between organisms
and their environments, social ecology is concerned with the
relationships between human populations and their environments.
As a result of technological convenience in the production
of our food, clothing and other needs, many people within our
society do not understand the relationship between our consumption
and its effects on the natural world. It is important for educators
to teach critical thinking behind how our needs and wants get
met, and the impacts of these processes may have on ourselves,
others, and the planet we live on. A key component is to teach
the connections between our daily consumption habits and their
impact on the environment using principles of social ecology.
The integration of social ecology into our educational and media systems
is essential in the shift towards a sustainable, healthy future.
